Bread Mold Experiment
Our students investigated whether the “5-second rule” holds true - specifically whether food remains safe to eat after being dropped on an unclean surface for five seconds or less.
They tested four conditions:
“Clean Bread” (unhandled)
"Dirty Hands Bread”
“Floor Bread” (dropped on the ground!)
“Trash Bread: (touched to the trash can!)
Creating a Science Poster!
Our students made posters that displayed:
🔍 Hypothesis: Which surface would grow the most mold?
🔬 Experiment: Watch the mold grow
✅ Conclusion: What happened?
What Happened?
Students learned that temperature was a big factor in growing mold. The one poster that was in the warmest area grew the most colorful mold! And the trashcan bread was the moldiest.
Conclusion
The more germs something touches, the more likely it is to grow mold quickly, even if it is under 5-seconds! This experiment was a real-life reminder of how important handwashing is because germs are everywhere!
